Waterfront Ale House in Kips Bay...another neighborhood favorite

Side entrance of Waterfront Ale House makes fun of the "Lousy Food and Ugly Owner"-- seems to me like a good sign if a place can have a sense of humor about itself like that.

People love it, with of course the usual individuals who of course hate it for some reason ( so often based on one bad experience...but I guess most of us tend to be like that).

Anyway, here is Yelp

Awesome spot.  One of the best local hangout/tavern type places in probably all of Manhattan.  Sometimes I come here to drink to excess.  Most times I come in for a meal after work or during a game on the weekends.

Recommended:   Cheeseburgers, waffle fries, french onion soup, buffalo calamari, chicken wings (excellent and actually well cooked), good salads (says the lady).

They constantly have unique specials - so the menu is constantly evolving.  For a no frills place with overachieving food, come here.

*Also note worthy is their beer list.  There's a lot of them.

Hit or miss spot with a decent variety of craft beers: selection changes from time to time.

The burger is ok. Nothing special with standard toppings.

Don't order the Steamed Vegetable Dumplings. These aren't made fresh. They're store bought frozen.

Vegetarian Chili is good but heavy.

Some friends like the buffalo wings. Some don't. The biggest complaints are "over cooked" and "not enough heat".

We went here while we were in the city for work - met up a group late on a Monday night so you imagine how hopping the place was - not.

It's a typical hole in the wall place - not super clean, nothing especially exciting to look or see.

I think if I lived near here this could be my local place where you could meet up for a drink - or this is the place you ended up at when you don't have anywhere you know you want to go?!

Not my first choice - but was ok for quick drink.

Pretty good selection of craft beers changes up every so often. There wasn't anything that I had never heard of but still a great variety! Came here with a couple of friends on a mini pub crawl recently and decided to have lunch. Let me tell you, this place has awesome food. I got the pulled pig sandwich and was not disappointed, delish! My two friends got the special which was a venison burger and they were also thrilled. I'm sure I'll be back on another pub crawl or if I'm in the area.

Used to have a much more varied draft selection, but they gravitate too much toward single style seasonals, making 13 IPAs to pick from every summer, which gets old fast; also can get crowded, which some enjoy to feel like they are in the local scene. I prefer the slow winter nights when the tap selection has depth and the always knowledgable bartender has time. Decent food, btw, though fried stuff is too fried, salty too salty, etc. Great burgers, though, from my carnivore days. True Kips Bay icon.

If I could give 0 stars, I would. I tried to write the below feedback to the Waterfront Ale House email address from their website but I guess their email systems aren't working. So here is my feedback!

    To whom this may concern,

I cannot believe that Waterfront Ale House would allow such horrible treatment to customers.

My mother in law from out of town had wanted to try French Dip in NYC. So after checking on Yelp for good reviews on French Dip, it led us to Waterfront Ale House early Monday, June 17. Unfortunately, we did not enjoy the meal and left more than half of it on our plate (mainly because the roast beef was served cold (which the waitress explained this is how it is served, so OK), and the bread was stale - it was tough to even cut through with a steak knife. Seemed as if the sandwich was made days before, pulled out of the fridge, buns were toasted and that was it). After providing both negative AND positive feedback to the waitress (i.e. the au jus and the coleslaw were great), she had left and after quite some time dropped off our bill without ever acknowledging the feedback nor apologizing for the fact that we did not enjoy the meal. (Receipt indicated 'Lauren' on it).

I had decided to leave a $0 tip due to how the situation was handled overall and I wrote a note on the back of the receipt explaining this. I also felt the need to explain myself to a manager. When I approached the gentleman behind the bar and asked for a manager, he had asked me what was wrong. I started to discuss the original feedback that I had provided to the waitress and then the waitress came to us, raising her voice at me in front of other customers with strong body language and then stormed out to the back. If the gentleman I was speaking to was a manager, then I cannot believe that a manager would allow their staff to do this to a customer in front of other customers. It was extremely unprofessional. I never once raised my voice at anyone and I was being very diplomatic and honest about the feedback. If the gentleman was not a manager, then he completely ignored my request to speak with one.

I cannot believe that an organization such as Waterfront Ale House could allow such unprofessionalism as this speaks highly to their values and quality as a restaurant. I will be writing about this experience on multiple review forums as this by far has been the worst treatment I've experienced as a customer in NYC (and I live in NYC and have eaten at a lot of places). My mother in law and I  were not impressed with the behavior of this waitress and the rest of the staff there that day.

    Regards.

This was my local for years back when they opened in the 90's in Manhattan.  Right from the start Sam was knocking it out of the park with great food.  French dip sandwich and venison chili nachos are just a couple of great ones.  Hot sauce is just out of this world.  The beer selection is constantly changing and is always on the cutting edge.  The bar staff really differentiates this place.  Still some of the same staff from the very beginning.  Milan always made an impression over the years as a consummate professional.  Great combination of good food, good beer and a staff to boot.  Nice work Sam!!!

If I come back, it's for the food. The pulled pork sandwich, the antelope burger (perfectly gamey!) and the waffle fries with home-made ketchup. It's pub food and you know it, but it's less greasy with more flavor than at most places.
Beer selection is not bad, though don't trust the list of bottled beers. It seems to be highly inaccurate. But the drafts are really what they post, and they come at a reasonable price. So in other words, a perfect place for a few pints and some delicious food!

I've been here many-a-times, and Waterfront Ale House is a good Murray Hill / Kips Bay joint if you're looking for a chill place to sit and chat with friends.  Although I have yet to eat here, Waterfront Ale House has free self-serve popcorn.  Drink prices are reasonable, draft selection is good, and bartenders are friendly.  Once of these days, I'll stop back with an appetite for that antelope burger :)
